Module 5 - Application to Your Classroom
Before you move to Module 6, apply the concepts we have practiced in Module 5 in your classroom.
Plan a number talk
Plan at least one number talk to use in your classroom: either a number talk using open number lines to record student thinking or a Rekenrek talk.
- Write a number talk appropriate for your students (consider subtraction or addition with regrouping). We strongly encourage you to plan with a partner and do the same number talk.
- Identify your goal for the talk
- Predict the different strategies that children might use to find the answer. Consider strategies that lead to a right answer and also strategies that lead to a wrong answer.
- Practice how you will record these different strategies.
Lead the number talk with your students
- Begin your talk by asking “What’s the solution?” or “How many dots do you see?”
- After students respond, then “How did you figure that out?” or “How do you see it?”
- Record student ideas and connect the different strategies
Reflect on the experience of leading the number talk
If you planned a number talk with a partner then discuss these questions together.
- What went well?
- What surprised you?
- What will you do differently next time as a result of this reflection? What do you hope will happen as a result of the shifts in your instruction?
- What did you learn about listening to and recording student ideas?
