Module 7 Reflection
You have now completed all of the modules.
Please discuss the following questions as a way to reflect on the entire course on Number Sense:
- This course has focused on building number sense in students through the use of number talks. What big ideas are you taking away about number sense and the use of number talks in your classroom?
- Many teachers ask about the scope and sequence of number talks, however there is no set or definitive order in giving number talks. Rather, number talks are designed around the needs of the students in your classroom. Some people suggest starting with dot talks, no matter what age, as an an entry point for students and adults to start thinking about multiple ways of thinking and seeing numbers. Talk with your group about the types of number talk routines you might start with in your classroom, and how you might progress to other number talks that help your students build a strong number sense.
- CGI is founded on the principle of understanding and promoting student thinking in the learning of mathematics. How do number talks contribute to this principle?
- What have you learned about various students in your classroom and their cultural backgrounds? In what ways does your new knowledge honor their cultural strengths? In what ways might your new knowledge reflect negative judgments of your students? How can you work to better understand your students and their cultural frame of reference so you can strengthen your relationship with them? If you're struggling with this idea, see http://glec.education.iupui.edu/Images/Newsletters/Sept_2015_Dispatch_PDF.pdf Links to an external site.
- In what ways did your PLC grow in its capacity to challenge and support one another to improve and enhance your teaching practices? Where do you want to go from here as a PLC?
In your PLC, discuss how you will support and use the support of other teachers in developing number talks in your classroom.
