This professional development course, targeted for educators of math in grades 5 - 12, will help teachers prepare their students for thinking algebraically in the elementary grades through high school. This is an introductory virtual course in understanding and using number talks to increase student understanding of algebra. It introduces theories, models, and methods for analyzing and addressing student understanding of mathematical concepts.
The goal of this course is to enhance mathematical understandings and skill in conducting number talks. Course objectives will be achieved through interactive learning experiences, reading, critical reflection, small group practice, classroom application and independent work.
Course Objectives
The main purpose of The State of Algebrafication course is to help Minnesota teachers improve their understanding of mathematics to impact student achievement. The course includes content core ideas and practices that improve teacher capacity in the following areas:
- Content Knowledge - giving teachers an in-depth understanding of subject matter and the relationship among concepts within a learning progression across grade levels of the discipline; and,
- Pedagogical Content Knowledge - helping teachers integrate their understanding of subject matter knowledge, pedagogy and context to more effectively help all students be successful with the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Mathematics.
